Maurice “Reece” Anderson (1934-2013) was an originator and one of the staunchest supporters of the single-neck “universal” steel guitar concept. He developed the Bb6th universal to play jazz and country, switching between the two modes by raising the D strings to Eb, which then became the root tone of an Eb9th tuning. He also played the more common E9/B6 universal, which lowers the E strings to D# to create a B6th tuning. Reece’s tuning philosophy is described passionately in his essay “Back and To The Future”, found here.
